A leading Highland tourism group is warning of “catastrophic implications” if planned changes in tax laws go ahead.

They claim it could lead to the closure of self-catering businesses, causing immense harm to the Highland economy.

Now, Lochaber’s Glen Spean and the Great Glen Tourism Group is urging its members to write to Highland MP Charles Kennedy urging him to continue his campaign against the changes, which will mean owners of holiday lets will no longer be classed as businesses and, consequently, will be ineligible for tax relief.

A group spokesman said: “It could cause immense damage to the local economy with businesses closing down and tourism numbers slumping as a result.

“We can’t understand how it has been decided that people operating a number of self-catering units are not businesses.” More…
